Replace bed scene with person taking tincture red nose

Histamine is easily connected with allergies but not so much with insomnia—one affects your immune system, the other your sleep—but they’re actually closely connected.  Histamine has a duel function
– In the immune system, it drives allergic reactions
– In the brain, it promotes wakefulness and alertness
This dual role is the key to understanding the overlap between allergies and insomnia.  This is why you might hear of some people taking an anti-histamine to help them sleep.

🧠 Histamine and Mood
One of histamines main role is to promote Wakefulness, Attention and Cognitive alertness
But it does this by interacting with other neurotransmitter systems
When balanced, it supports alertness and healthy rhythms.  When dysregulated, it can push the brain into a state of overstimulation without restoration—the classic “wired and tired” and anxious pattern.

Histamine-related neurotransmitter imbalance can feel like:

  • “Wired but tired”
  • Anxiety with fatigue
  • Light, broken sleep
  • Brain fog despite mental overactivity
  • Sensitivity to stress or stimuli

Taking Melatonin for Sleep.

Histamine competes with melatonin.  As histamine rises melatonin is suppressed.  If histamine is not being cleared, it will accumulate throughout the day and levels will be highest at night.  Taking melatonin at night for sleep overcomes this.  This may however create a dependency on its use.  There is insufficient research to assess the safety of long term use of melatonin beyond 2 – 3 years of use.  It also does not address the underlying cause of sleep disruption.  Common side effects are morning grogginess, headaches, nausea, bedwetting and dizziness.

WHY DO HISTAMINE SYMPTOMS SEEM TO GET WORSE AT NIGHT?

– Histamine from foods can build up through the night
– The body uses night time for repair and immune system will be more active then.
– One of the symptoms of increased histamine release are increased inflammation and swelling.  This – – increases nasal/sinus congestion, skin irritation, rashes etc. .  Being horizontal and without distraction increases sensitivity to this at night.

Histamine Through the Lens of Medical Herbalism

From a medical herbalist’s perspective, histamine is not simply a “problem chemical” to suppress, but an important hormone that acts as a messenger.  Rather than focusing only on blocking histamine, it is better to understand why histamine responses are exaggerated and how to restore balance.

Causes of Histamine imbalance
In herbal medicine, elevated histamine activity is often interpreted as a manifestation of underlying dysfunction in key systems:

  • Immune dysregulation – An overreactive immune system may respond excessively to otherwise harmless stimuli.
Digestive weakness – Poor gut health can impair the breakdown of histamine and increase sensitivity to foods.
Liver overload – The liver plays a central role in detoxifying histamine; sluggish function may contribute to accumulation.
Nervous system sensitivity – Chronic stress can amplify inflammatory and allergic responses.

Histamine Metabolism Is it in your DNA?

Is it in your DNA?.  Look at family patterns.  Is there a pattern of sinus congestion, skin irritation, allergies, headaches, unexplained chronic insomnia or food sensitivities.   Testing is available via The Better Health clinic runs Nutrigenomics testing with LifecodeGX.  Lab reports test gene function from a nutritional perspective.  Let’s look at the histamine panel closer.   Once histamine has done its job, it must be degraded. There are two main enzymes, each with their own genes.  If either of these are genetically downregulated, added support will be needed to clear histamine from the body.

  1. Diamine Oxidase (DAO)
    • Main role: breaks down extracellular histamine, especially from food.
    • Dysfunction → histamine intolerance, gut symptoms, headaches.
    • Essential CoFactors for DAO function are Vitamin B6 and Copper, Zinc and Vit C.
    • DAO enzyme is available online as a supplement.
  2. Histamine-N-Methyltransferase (HNMT)
    • Main role: breaks down intracellular histamine, particularly in the brain.
    • Dysfunction → high histamine in the CNS → insomnia, anxiety, “wired” feeling.
    • S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) acts as a crucial cofactor, that activates HNMT to degrade histamine.  SAMe is a supplement available to buy online.

Herbal Approaches to Histamine Balance

Medical herbalists use a combination of strategies tailored to the individual. Herbal bottles labelled antihistamines work very differently to pharmaceutical anti-histamines.  They will contain the following;  See also My top Anti-Histamine Herbs by a Medical Herbalist

  • Anti-inflammatory herbs to reduce tissue irritation
  • Mast cell stabilizing herbs to limit excessive histamine release
  • Digestive tonics to improve breakdown and assimilation
  • Alteratives (“blood cleansers”) to support long-term systemic balance
  • Anti-histamine herbs to moderate (not block) the release of histamine

Diet and Lifestyle as Medicine

Herbs are only part of the picture. Dietary and lifestyle adjustments are often essential as an interim period until root cause is resolved :

  • Reducing high-histamine foods.
  • Reducing exposure to irritants within reason
  • Encouraging rest and stress management

ANTI HISTAMINES DO NOT ADDRESS ROOT CAUSE

Two common anti-histamines are H1 and H2 blockers.  H1 blockers are primarily used for immune alert and airway control. H2 blockers partially block stomach acid and used for ulcers and acid reflux.  Whenever something is being blocked, we should ask what job does that chemical/hormone have in the body and how it may impact our body if we block it?
Antihistamines h2 blockers can alter microbiome, reduce stomach acid and interfere with absorption of nutrients.  Linked to b12, magnesium, iron deficiencies.  H1 blockers early studies show potential altered gut microbiome and constipation
